Memorable Sports Moment of the Day: Derek Jeter landed his 3,000th hit today, becoming the 28th baseball player to do so, and the first Yankee to join the elite club. Jeter picked up his third grand on a homer into the left field stands off Tampa Bay Rays southpaw David Price.
The Yankees fan who caught the milestone-setting ball, 23-year-old Christian Lopez of Highland Mills, shocked everyone when he returned the souvenir — estimated to be worth as much as $250k — without asking for a dime. According to YES Network, Lopez was rewarded for his loyalty with four suite tickets to every game for the remainder of the season, as well as signed bats and balls, and front-row seats at tomorrow’s game.
Bonus: Jeter is one of only eleven 3,000 Hit Club members who struck all their hits with the same team. Can you name the other ten?

I have never really followed any particular baseball team much. I have always followed Derek Jeter.
One of the first baseball games I watched on tv was a NY Yankees game, and I immediately fell in love with Derek Jeter. I’ve been following him since.
I’m no die hard baseball fan, nor am I a die hard Derek Jeter fan, but I do have an immense fascination with him.
I’m considering finally deciding on a team to root for. (baseball wise). I will most likely side with the NY Yankees because of Derek Jeter. I have not officially decided.
